Letterbook of Isaac Hull, 1838 August-1839 December 6.

Handwritten copy of letters sent to and from commodore Isaac Hull, Commander of the U.S. Navy Force in the Mediterranean. He assumed his command on 12 Sept 1838 and his flagship, the USS Ohio, arrived at Port Mahon, the headquarters of the command on 4 Jan 1839. The letters concern his assuming this command, his trip on the Ohio to Europe, and his traveling to various ports in the Mediterranean looking out for the interests of Americans, especially seamen, as well as inquiring into and reporting on the condition of American commerce.

Isaac Hull (1773-1843) commanded USS Constitution in her 1812 victory over Guerriere, in which it earned the sobriquet "Old Ironsides."
